It’s quite surprising how many times I am asked by others: how do I motivate my team/company/employees/family /etc? It’s even more surprising how they then react to my answer which is: you can’t motivate anyone except yourself. People must be motivated by their own inner desires, wants and values. You cannot do it for them or to them.
Psychologists will tell you that there are three types of motivation.
- Fear motivation (do it or else ).
- Incentive motivation (do it and I’ll give you something/a reward).
- Personal or internal motivation (I do it because I want to and it is of benefit to me).
The first two work in the short term and then lose their impact over the long term. It’s only the long term thinking that creates cohesion in a group and the positive cooperation and growth that organizations are looking for in today’s world. People do what they want to do and are committed to outcomes they can relate to ( and own) and then participate in.
I’m sure you are aware that the old rah-rah-stand-on-your-chair-and-scream motivation-session doesn’t produce a lasting impact within your organization any more.
